When We Say It Takes a Community...This Is What We Mean
A report by Nebraska Domestic Abuse Death Review Team has identified 89 domestic abuse-related victim deaths since July 2022. Behind that number are people, families, children, friends, coworkers, and entire communities left to pick up the pieces.
Victims face significant barriers when attempting to leave abusive situations. The risk of harm often increases at the point of separation, and many survivors remain in unsafe environments due to fear, financial dependence, lack of housing, cultural or language barriers, immigration concerns, disability, or limited access to resources in rural areas.
Need has intensified following the closure of Tyson. This economic disruption has increased financial instability for many victims and may force them to remain with abusers for survival.
- From January through March 2026, compared to the same time period last year:
- The number of survivors we served increased by 55%
- Shelter nights increased by 23%
- Survivor contacts increased by 140%
- Hours spent providing services increased by 160%
This is why the work of Sheltering Hands matters. We are here to support survivors, provide safety planning and advocacy, help people navigate systems that can feel overwhelming, and make sure survivors know they do not have to face abuse alone. But our work doesn't stop with responding to crisis. We believe in prevention, education, awareness, and building a community where people recognize abuse, know how to respond, and understand that domestic violence is not a private issue.
If you wonder what you can do, start by learning. Talk about healthy relationships. Know the warning signs. Believe people when they reach out. Share local resources. And remember that sometimes the most important thing you can do is simply let someone know:
“I believe you. I’m here. You’re not alone.”

Sheltering Hands (formerly Parent-Child Center) mission is to provide comprehensive, survivor-centered services to individuals impacted by domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, human trafficking, and child abuse. Our services prioritize safety, trust, empowerment, and cultural responsiveness, recognizing the unique experiences and needs of each survivor.
We provide vital services including crisis intervention, emergency safe shelter, emergency transportation, and financial assistance to address immediate safety and stability needs. Survivors also have access to medical advocacy, civil and criminal justice advocacy, safety planning, protection order assistance, a 24-hour crisis line, emotional support, and ongoing personal advocacy.
Advocates work with survivors to recognize and build on their strengths, support their decision-making, and ensure they have increased safety strategies and more awareness of available community resources. Services are delivered with dignity, respect, and confidentiality, ensuring survivors feel heard, believed, and supported without judgment.
All services are provided free of charge and are available in English and Spanish, with interpretation services for additional language needs, ensuring access for everyone seeking support.

The Purple Door Thrift Store
The Purple Door thrift store helps support survivors and provide essential resources to our community. Every purchase helps fund program support and emergency assistance for survivors as they work toward safety and stability.
The Purple Door can also provide free clothing, dishes, bedding, and other essentials to clients and community members referred by local service providers. We’re open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 AM–4 PM.
