Police Service Teams: The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office is proud to introduce two new K-9 teams working within Dawson County.

K-9 “Maverick” is a 1-year-old Belgian Shepard handled by Deputy Garrett McArdle.  K-9 “Halik” is also a 1-year-old Belgian Shepard handled by Deputy Justin South.  Both of these teams are new to the K-9 program and are just completing the necessary training to become certified.  K-9 “Ares” is retiring after 7 years of outstanding and remarkable service.

In the past, Dawson County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Teams have done educational presentations to schools in Cozad, Lexington, Gothenburg, S.E.M., and Overton. In schools, there is both a proactive and a reactive response to narcotics. Having a K-9 in the school is a deterrent for crime and narcotics, keeping kids safe and educating them about the dangers of illegal drugs. These presentations discuss the harmful consequences of drugs, how a K-9 is trained, and how they detect narcotics.

Dawson County K-9 teams have conducted numerous presentations throughout Dawson County, for schools, businesses, and community partnerships.

Both K-9 Maverick and Halik are trained in narcotics detection, tracking & apprehension, and handler protection. Previous K-9 teams have assisted various police departments and the Nebraska State Patrol in seizing large amounts of methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, and marijuana. Both current K-9 teams look forward to continuing this success in assisting these agencies when requested.

Training in these areas requires a significant amount of hard work and time for both the K-9 and the handler. This training is often very physically demanding as well as mentally exhausting for both the K-9 and the handler.

With the dedication and support of the community, the Dawson County K-9 Unit will continue to serve the area. With this unit, we can assist other agencies, as well as the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, in locating numerous narcotics violations and successfully locating suspects and missing juveniles.

The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office is seeking to continue funding training, equipment, and veterinary services for the K-9 program.  With these generous donations, we will be able further to keep our citizens, schools, and communities safer and drug-free.

Thank you for your support!
