The Family Advocacy Network (FAN) is a nationally accredited child advocacy center serving 14 central Nebraska counties, including Dawson County. FAN was dedicated in April 2001. Since our dedication, our utilization has increased over the years as well as increased responsibility assigned by the Nebraska Legislature.

We have been housed on the campus of CHI-Good Samaritan Hospital since inception.  We recently moved to a facility that will not only meet the needs of our families but will provide a calm, adequate, and safe space to begin the healing journey of victims and their non-offending family members.  We were housed in a 2,500 sq. ft. facility which provided a small reception area,  2 offices, 2 interview rooms, one small conference room, one bathroom, a small medical room, and one observation room for our MDT members.  Our new facility is 9,400 sq. ft., housing 2 separate reception areas for families, 3 conference rooms, 4 interview rooms, 2 observation rooms, a kitchenette, a triage room, 5 bathrooms, 12 offices, a medical suite, and space for on-site mental health services.

This new space provides established services to multiple families, and expands services to include on-site mental health and triage.  FAN provides forensic interviews, medical examinations, SANE nurse medical exams, advocacy, case coordination, and hair/nail testing for drug-exposed children. New services will include the triage center, which is a family room that is available to children while they are awaiting placement.  When a child is not able to return home following an investigation, they are placed by HHS into a family placement or foster home placement.  Mental health services will be provided on-site for immediate crisis intervention, assessment, and ongoing therapy.

We need support from the communities that we serve to meet the needs of our children and families. Specific to Dawson County, we served 118 victims and their families. There were 63 victims from Lexington, 25 from Cozad, 19 from Gothenburg, and 11 from other communities in Dawson County.
