Dawson County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit

Police Service Teams:  The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office currently has one active K-9 team working within Dawson County. K-9 Ares, is a 6-year-old Dutch Shepard handled by Sergeant Chad Byrne.

The K-9 Team has done educational presentations to schools in Cozad, Lexington, Gothenburg, S.E.M., and Overton. In schools, there is both a proactive and reactive response to narcotics. Having a K-9 in the school is a deterrent for crime and narcotics, keeping kids safe and educating kids about the dangers. These presentations discuss the harmful consequences of drugs, how a K-9 is trained, and how they detect narcotics.

Chad and Ares have conducted numerous presentations throughout Dawson County to schools, businesses, and community groups.

K-9 Ares is trained in narcotics detection. K-9 Ares and his handler have assisted various police departments and the Nebraska State Patrol in seizing large amounts of methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, and marijuana.

Training in these areas takes a lot of hard work and time for both the K-9 and handler. This training is often very physically demanding as well as mentally exhausting for both the K-9 and handler.

With the dedication and support of the community, the Dawson County K-9 Unit will continue to serve the area. This unit is able to assist other agencies as well as the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office in locating numerous narcotics violations and successful location of suspects and missing juveniles. The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office is looking to continue to fund training and equipment for the K-9 program.  With generous donations, we will be able to further keep our citizens, schools, and communities safer and drug-free.
