Dawson County 4-H has had a great year. 4-H members took part in many traditional 4-H programs such as a speech contest, presentation contest, clothing construction & fashion show, ID & judging contests, and state and national contests. The Dawson County Fair was a fun time to participate in livestock shows, static exhibits, and helping in the 4-H cafe. Overall, we had 64 exhibitors enter 399 static exhibits, 490 livestock exhibits, 26 dog show entries, and 55 youth participated in shooting sports.
This year, Dawson County Shooting Sports had two youths selected to be Nebraska Shooting Sports Ambassadors and represented Dawson County and Nebraska at the 4-H National Shooting Sports Championships. The club participated in State Indoor Archery, Outdoor Archery, Shotgun, BB Gun, and Air Rifle throughout the year with many participants. Looking forward to 2025, the Dawson County Shooting Sports Club will be introducing Muzzleloader as another division 4-H’ers can participate.
Dawson County 4-H had a strong showing at the 2024 4-H Premier Animal Science Event. 4-H’ers from across the state gathered to compete in eight livestock events. Twenty-three Dawson County 4-H’ers participated and brought home five team championships along with many individual awards. The Intermediate Meats judging team was the state champions this year. Additionally, the Junior and Senior Dawson County Quiz Bowl teams placed third while the two intermediate teams took a champion spot and took third place honors as well. The Livestock Judging teams also did well at this event. Overall, the Dawson County Intermediate team took 4th place while the Junior Team placed 2nd place. All these teams had fantastic participants and amazing coaches who volunteered their time.
The 4-H motto, "to make the best better," drives 4-H members and caring adult volunteers to achieve their goals to the highest standards. Dawson County 4-H offers nearly 160 projects that youth can participate in, whether in a club environment, after-school session, school enrichment, or on an individual basis. The skills learned through 4-H participation help youth become better members of their families, communities, and the world. Youth ages 5-19 may become members to do a variety of projects, community service, and social learning.
With donor assistance this year, scholarship money will assist youth participating in the Dawson County 4-H camp at Camp Comeca along with other new one-day camps, State and National trips for judging and contest teams and State & National shooting sports events. We hope to continue to provide support for our volunteers, as well as providing investment into our clubs and supporting their continued growth and development.
4-H is the United States' largest youth organization. 4-H is one of a kind! Your support of the Dawson County program is greatly appreciated.
